How to Get a Job in Tech

Are you looking for a job in the technology field? This workshop will provide you with the tools and resources to get you on the path to success. You will learn about the local tech scene and where to look for employment postings and networking opportunities; get one-on-one resume consultations with local Industry leaders, HR representatives and hiring managers; and learn how to fine tune your elevator pitch to leave a lasting impression (Dinner will be provided).**Participants are asked to bring 2 hard copies of their resume to the workshop
Our workshop agenda will incorporate three breakout sessions:
1) Presentation:“The New Orleans Tech Scene”
Instructor: Barrett Conrad, Founder and CEO, Cotinga Soft
This presentation will focus on discussing the current and future career prospects in the New Orleans tech industry, providing information on where people should look for tech-related employment postings, and list networking opportunities around the city.
2) Elevator Pitch Guide
Instructor: Desiree Young, Founder and CEO, Venture Walk
During this segment, our instructor will provide advice on best practices for developing a personal elevator pitch. Workshop participants will engage in group exercises, where they will be asked to prepare and deliver a 30-60 second elevator pitch targeted to networking and employment interviews. Participants will receive personalized comments/feedback from our instructor, and insight on how to improve their skills.
3) Resume Consultations with Facilitators:
Bring your resume for a one-on-one resume consultation and critique. Workshop participants will be paired with local Industry leaders and hiring managers, who will offer advice on how to build & strengthen your resume, what local tech companies are looking for, skills to cultivate, and other recommendations based on your career goals. Participants are asked to bring 2 hard copies of their resume to the workshop
** This event will take place at GE Digital New Orleans (201 St Charles, 31st Floor). Attendees must check in on the 30th floor and receive a “Visitors Badge” before proceeding to the workshop.

6:30pm – 7:30pm: Breakout session 1 (Group 1 – Resume consultation; Group 2 – Elevator Pitch)
7:30pm – 8:30pm: Breakout session 2 (Group 1 – Elevator Pitch; Group 2 – Resume consultation)
