WordPress has evolved into a versatile open source Content Management System (CMS), and even though you can still use it to create simple blogs, it also allows you to create fully functional websites and mobile applications. Everything from mom-and-pop businesses to blogs for some of the largest names out there (CNN, Spotify, and Time, among others) are running on WordPress, with more being added each day.
During WIT’s WordPress Workshop, attendees learned to build a website from scratch, and improved their skills through hands on activities and step by step instructions.
Our SEO best practices and guidelines segment proved to be one of our most engaging topics; attendees learned about the importance of strategically written content, as well as tips & tricks to improve their site’s traffic and reach. We covered WordPress terms and keywords, and created personalized sitemaps. Participants also chose a theme for their site, set up their own navigation menus, added/updated plugins, and added blog posts and pages.
The three hour workshop was led by instructor Wendy Dolan, owner and founder of Get Online NOLA. Wendy has been building websites with WordPress since 2008 and teaches regular workshops to small business owners in New Orleans.
